High winds whipped through Yakima on Sunday, knocking out power for more than 2,900 customers by the middle of the evening. Pacific Power officials said they lost an entire circuit at 8:09 p.m. in west Yakima, affecting service for 2,213 customers.

Before the cell phone revolution, the contractor who accidentally severed three AT&T telephone cables recently would have caused far greater disruption for the Naperville businesses and residents between Washington Street and Greene Road. After callers alerted AT&T to the outages around noon Thursday, crews worked to splice the lines back together, and AT&T made 35 cell phones available.
